Define Your Book Idea
Start by clarifying the central theme/s or focus of your book and why it’s important. Consider the impact your book will have as well as the distinctive viewpoint or value you’re bringing to the field or area.
Establish Learning Outcomes
Identify what knowledge, skills, or competencies you want learners to gain. Your content will be shaped by these learning objectives, which will also guarantee that learners have a clear goal and path through the content.
Develop a Content Outline
Structure is crucial for both clarity and engagement. Draft an outline that breaks down chapters and sections, and decide on a consistent format for each chapter. Supplementary materials, like visuals and examples, can enhance understanding and make the content more impactful.
Plan Interactive and Engaging Elements
Interactive elements add value and engagement. Consider quizzes, videos, and case studies etc. that reinforce learning and make complex concepts accessible.
Set Project Milestones and Timescales
Breaking the project into phases helps you manage your time and resources effectively. Set major milestones, such as drafting and revision, and aim for a target completion date. Keep track of your progress and adjust the timeline as needed to stay on course. The Library will help you keep your project on track!
Define Team Roles (If Applicable)
If you’re working with a team, assign roles for writing, editing, and multimedia creation or adaptation. Determine the expertise or tools needed for each part of the project and establish a plan for communication and collaboration to keep everyone aligned and on track. You could find software such as Trello or Microsoft Teams useful to communicate with your project team and keep a log of ongoing workstreams.
Integrate Open Educational Resources (OER) and Create Your Own Content
OER can enrich your content, improve accessibility, and save time. Explore open education resources relevant to your topic, and ensure you follow proper attribution and licensing. Remixed or adapted OER can provide a foundational layer that enhances your book’s content.
If you plan to create your own content, such as videos, audio, or images, please read the University’s policy on audio and video recording for educational purposes. This will ensure you obtain all necessary permissions to enable sharing from the outset.
