Why is a diverse reading list important to students?

Watch this video to hear University of Leeds students, James Wagstaff, Aditi T R Murali, Shivani Gug, Gergely Kajos and Turki Alshaibani, discuss how having a diverse reading list is important to them.

As a black woman, I have had the first-hand experience of not seeing myself reflected in the reading lists… I was also aware of my visceral excitement when I saw sources from people of colour used in my modules. Such visibility empowered me to imagine a career in academia.

Esta-Rose Nyeko-Lacek

As part of the University of Leeds’ Decolonizing Frameworks and Access and Student Success programme, Esta-Rose Nyeko-Lacek, Student LITE intern 2021, undertook a 6-week project to analyse reading lists. This analysis looked at a random selection of reading lists from across the faculties and identified information on the creator and resource, including academic affiliation, place of birth, place and language of publication. The full report from the project can be viewed and downloaded below.
